Abstract

Prepositional objects are not usually associated with Northern Italian dialects, but a detailed analysis of medieval Ligurian texts reveals a number of examples that cannot be interpreted as datives. The data are consistent with the initial stage of the phenomenon in other Romance areas and the discussion highlights the complex origin of differential object marking.
